Etna Wines in Asian Markets

Exclusive Interview with Jacopo Maniaci
Born in 1990, Jacopo Maniaci is the CEO and a shareholder of Tenuta di Fessina, one of the most prestigious wineries on Mount Etna.
Tenuta di Fessina: A Mosaic of Terroirs on Mount Etna
Tenuta di Fessina is a microcosm where grapes are cultivated, harvested, and vinified from different slopes of the volcano, strictly within historic areas of reference. This winery embraces a philosophy that respects the memory of each vineyard and the native grape varieties that thrive best in each specific location. The landscape is a stunning palette of terroirs, framed by dry-stone walls and the deep cobalt sea in the background, defining the distinctive Etna DOC, which extends like a crescent across three volcanic slopes.
What are your forecasts for 2025?
"I would like to invest in key wine events, with James Suckling Great Wines World Asia at the top of the list. Increasing visibility and expanding our presence in strategic markets will be a priority."
Which markets have been the most interesting and why?
"Japan, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are thriving markets where both sales volumes and wine education are steadily increasing. I observe a growing appreciation for wine knowledge and cultural depth, making consumers in these regions particularly fascinating. During tastings, it is a pleasure to share our wines with an audience that is both attentive and curious."
Which markets are the most established, and with what type of products?
"Without a doubt, our white and red Cru from single vineyards are in high demand. I also see significant interest in micro plots, individual vinifications, and old vines. Consumers are increasingly drawn to uniqueness and singularity. With Etna DOC, we have a strong advantage—our storytelling is compelling and highly attractive."
Which markets offer the highest profit margins?
"Japan and Australia (if considered part of the Asian market) stand out, followed by other key regions. We have maintained strong relationships with these markets for over a decade."
Which markets are the most gourmet-oriented?
"Japan is undoubtedly the leader in this aspect, demonstrating a meticulous approach to gourmet wine pairing."
How much do you invest in energy and promotion across different markets?
"We travel extensively. Personally, I take about 100 flights a year, many of them to international markets. A physical presence is crucial, not only for communication but also to honor and support the consumers who invest in our wines."
